Google employees ‘unhappy’ with CEO Sundar Pichai’s pay rise

[ad_1]

Google CEO Sundar Pichai was paid $226 million in 2022, it was reported this month. Stock awards accounted for over $218 million of the total, with the remainder made up of salaries and other income. The figure appears to have irritated some Google employees. According to CNBC, Google’s internal communication channels are filled with remarks and memes criticizing Pichai’s pay.

Some employees desired a pay cut. According to the story, various memes are circulating among employees about Pichai refusing to take a wage cut while the company is on a cost-cutting spree. Google did lay off 12,000 workers earlier this year, and various other benefits were also eliminated. This happened when it was disclosed that Apple CEO Tim Cook had willingly taken a 40% pay cut. Cook was not alone; Zoom CEO Eric Yuan took a 98% wage cut and refused to accept any bonuses. Zoom had laid off nearly 1,300 people.

Google’s CFO, Ruth Porat, wrote an email to all workers advising them of the company’s cost-cutting efforts. One of the jokes, according to the newspaper, claimed, “Ruth’s cost savings applied to everyone… except our hardworking VPS and CEO.” Another Shrek-themed meme stated, “Sundar accepting $226 million while laying off 12k Googlers, cutting perks, and destroying morale and culture.”

Pichai addressed employees at an all-hands meeting in 2022 about the corporation cutting certain benefits. He stated, “We shouldn’t always equate fun with money.” At the same meeting, he was asked if senior corporate executives’ pay will be reduced, but he didn’t answer the question.

Pichai, for his part, stated that he accepts “full responsibility” for the layoffs and the company’s financial position.
