According to a LinkedIn post on Tuesday, Giselle Makarachvili has resigned as CEO of Singapore-based co-living platform Hmlet.
Makarachvili stated in the article that she will take a career sabbatical to enjoy parenthood. “After years of non-stop, I chose to take a short break to enjoy adventures with my one-year-old as we count down the 5 weeks until his sister arrives,” Makarachvili explained. “The motherhood journey continues to inspire me in so many ways, and I continue to teach myself how to raise my children in a more sustainable and healthier world.”
According to her LinkedIn profile, Makarachvili joined Hmlet in January 2020 as vice president of operations before becoming chief operating officer in February 2021 and chief executive officer in October 2021.
Jonathan Wong will take her place, according to TechinAsia. According to a spokeswoman for Hmlet, an official announcement will be made next week.
Wong formerly served as CloudKitchens’ regional head of strategy and expansion, as well as Uber’s head of ridesharing for Singapore and Malaysia.
Yoan Kamalski and Zenos Schmickrath established Hmlet in 2016. Both Kamalski and Schmickrath are no longer with the organisation.
In 2022, it consolidated its operations with the European co-living company Habyt. The company will open three more residences in Hong Kong and Japan in March 2023. In addition, Hmlet will open its first hotel in Singapore in January 2023.
However, the business closed its Australia operations in 2021 and filed for voluntary insolvency in order to focus on its key markets of Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan.
In 2019, Burda Principal Investments led a $40 million Series B fundraising round for Hmlet. Sequoia India, Mitsubishi Real Estate, and Reinventure, an Australian venture capital firm, were also involved.
