A.I., according to former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, will destroy the tech sector, but “strong trees” will survive and there will be “healthy regrowth.”

Former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer thinks artificial intelligence (A.I.) is poised to ignite the tech industry, similar to how a wildfire would burn down a forest. But Mayer thinks the IT sector will ultimately emerge stronger, much as how natural cycles change the environment.
“The strong plants and trees thrive, and all the brush is removed. Mayer made this statement this week in Deer Valley, Utah, at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference. “And it allows for healthy regrowth afterward,” she added.
Nobody wants to see a company that has received funding and has experienced some success perform poorly, she said. However, it ultimately results in a better situation for the sector.
Mayer, who started her career in 1999 as Google’s 20th employee and is currently the CEO of consumer artificial intelligence firm Sunshine, said she thinks the business will be greatly affected by AI technology at this time.
For 29 years, Mayer said, “I’ve been waiting for an inflection point, and I think that’s what is happening.” What should we do with the energy generated by this inflection moment is the question. Mayer posed the question during an on-stage discussion with moderator Molly Wood of Molly Wood Media, ACME Capital general partner Aike Ho, Gitlab CMO, and CSO Ashley Kramer, Lacework CEO Jay Parikh, and others.
Even though Mayer has participated in politics as a significant Democratic donor, she thinks that the tech sector should regulate artificial intelligence rather than the government. Everyone is having a hard time keeping up because everything is happening so quickly, she claims. “When you regulate, you cannot regulate the present; rather, you must regulate where you will be in three to five years, and that’s very difficult to predict.”
Mayer, who served as Yahoo’s CEO from 2012 to 2017, had a contentious stint. She led the company’s acquisition of Tumblr and left her job after Verizon purchased the ground-breaking online startup in 2017 for $4.8 billion. Mayer is currently in charge of Sunshine, a company she started with the goal of using artificial intelligence to make simple chores like social calendaring. At a valuation of $60 million in 2020, the company most recently raised $20 million from investors like Norwest and Next Play Capital.
