Lance Bradley, a prominent executive in the automotive industry who became the CEO of Gloucester Rugby four years ago, has resigned.
He assumed leadership the September before Covid and guided the club through its challenging years.
Before joining the group, Lance had worked in the automotive business for more than 30 years, first for Ford Motor Company and most recently as the managing director of Mitsubishi Motors UK, a position he assumed in 2009, the year following the financial crisis.
Lance led the business, the sole importer of the Mitsubishi brand into the UK, to grow during a difficult period for the whole automotive sector. After over ten years in the position, he retired from it in 2018.
Lance revealed to editor Nicky Godding of Business & Innovation Magazine (now The Business Magazine) in 2020 that Gloucester Rugby had already lost $5 million in income due to the epidemic. The club asked its 6,000 season ticket holders whether they would accept to leave their money in the club to help fund the new training facility, and about 90% of season ticket holders consented. As a result, the amount could have been higher.
Except for seven employees—four directors, the head of medical, caring for recovering players, one communications team member, and the finance head—everyone went on leave.
To conduct a root and branch review of the club and maintain it, Alex and Lance worked for 10 hours every day, seven days a week.
Lance has decided that it is time for him to step down and allow a new leader to lead the Club on the next phase of its journey after the incredible scenes of Gloucester-Hartpury winning the Allianz Premier 15s title last month, according to Martin St Quinton, Chairman and Owner of Gloucester Rugby Club.
“He has guided the Club through a very trying time, not the least of which was the enormous obstacles posed by Covid-19, and the Club is leaving in good financial shape. He has much to be proud of, both on and off the pitch.
“I want to congratulate Lance for all he has done for Gloucester Rugby over the past four years. We send our best wishes to him and his family.
Alex Brown, the chief operating officer of Gloucester Rugby and one of Lance’s first recruits as the club’s commercial director, has been named the club’s interim CEO with immediate effect.
Lance posted a message on LinkedIn announcing his imminent departure, saying, “After four fantastic years at Gloucester Rugby I’ve decided it’s time to look for a new challenge. Thank you to everyone who participated. It’s been a blast in every way.
