According to The Guardian, the CEO of engineering behemoth Rolls-Royce is unable to view top secret UK documents linked to its submarine business due to Whitehall security’s “UK eyes only” regulations. Tufan Erginbilgiç, the CEO of Rolls Royce, holds dual citizenship in the United Kingdom and Turkey.

According to The Guardian, Chris Cholerton, the company’s group president, and Steve Carlier, head of the division, have been tasked with safeguarding sensitive material.

Rolls-Royce manufactures nuclear reactors that power British submarines. Vanguard nuclear-armed submarines are among them. The Royal Navy’s “continuous at-sea deterrent” capacity requires at least one nuclear-armed submarine to be on patrol at all times.

The nuclear deterrence function is governed by the Mutual Defence Treaty of 1958. It is an agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom.

Rolls-Royce’s submarine division employs 1,500 engineers who design, produce, and support reactors for UK submarines.

The inability of Erginbilgic to view records about Rolls-Royce’s submarine division has been cited as an example of poor governance. He took over the CEO position from Warren East. He had been in the position since 2015.

A ‘burning platform’

When he took charge, he referred to the corporation as a “burning platform,” comparing it to a burning oil rig on the sea, with workers forced to choose between fire and frigid waters. Rolls-Royce employs approximately 50,000 people. Erginbilgic has hired consultants, and thousands of jobs are set to be slashed.

Erginbilgic’s family is from Kilis, a town on the Syrian border. He finished his engineering studies at Istanbul Technical University. He received his diploma in 1982. He continued his education and entered the oil industry. From 2014 to 2020, he was CEO of British Petroleum’s downstream operations.

Documents intended for “UK eyes only” are typically labeled “UK secret.” These data are anticipated to have been “communicated in confidence,” and they “should not be released without the agreement of the British government,” according to the convention.

“There have been internal questions raised about whether it’s right to have a chief executive who is unable to participate in some of the most sensitive areas of the business,” a person close to Rolls-Royce told The Guardian.

“As CEO, Tufan is fully responsible for Rolls-Royce’s nuclear submarine business and has all relevant oversight of the operation of that business,” a Rolls-Royce spokeswoman stated.

“As a global defense supplier, there are times when our work is only for national eyes, such as in the United States.” Tufan receives help from Chris Cholerton, group president with responsibility for the submarine business.”
