Airtel Africa names a new CEO and announces a shift in leadership

In a move signaling both transition and continuity, Airtel Africa has bid farewell to its stalwart Chief Executive Officer, Olusegun “Segun” Ogunsanya, while welcoming a new leader into its fold. Effective July 1, 2024, Ogunsanya will pass the baton to Sunil Taldar, marking the beginning of a new era for the telecom and mobile money giant.

Ogunsanya’s departure marks the end of an illustrious tenure that began in 2012 when he assumed leadership of Airtel’s operations in Nigeria. Over nine years, he navigated the complexities of the African telecom landscape with finesse, overseeing remarkable revenue growth and spearheading the introduction of groundbreaking products that resonated with customers continent-wide.

Under his stewardship, Airtel Africa embarked on transformative endeavors, including the launch of its inaugural sustainability strategy and the establishment of the Airtel Africa Charitable Foundation. With a keen understanding of local dynamics, Ogunsanya leaves behind a legacy of innovation and social impact.

Transitioning into a new chapter, Sunil Taldar steps into the role of Managing Director and CEO, poised to build upon Ogunsanya’s legacy. Having joined Airtel Africa in 2023, Taldar brings a wealth of experience in transformational leadership, laying a strong foundation for the company’s continued growth and evolution.

Reflecting on Ogunsanya’s contributions, Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Airtel Africa, expressed gratitude for his dedication and foresight. As Ogunsanya embarks on a well-deserved retirement, his expertise will continue to shape the company’s trajectory, with plans for his involvement as an advisor for the next twelve months.

At the heart of this transition lies the Airtel Africa Charitable Foundation, poised to drive the company’s sustainability agenda forward. With a focus on digital inclusion, financial empowerment, education access, and environmental stewardship, the foundation embodies Airtel Africa’s commitment to making a meaningful difference in the communities it serves.

As Airtel Africa charts its course into the future, it does so with reverence for its past and a steadfast commitment to creating positive change across the African continent.
